Myspace was a site originally set up for new artists or bands within the music industry to upload and promote their own original music. It was very popular and helped people find songs of their choice as well as advertising users music, songs and gain popularity. But as technology has grown, sites have become much more high tech and more popular which led to a rapid increase of new social networking sites and a very popular website known as Youtube. Youtube was so popular from when it first started an still to present day and in the first six months of starting up more videos were produced and uploaded compared to 60 years worth of other traditional channels (without producers). People who have webcams or video cameras can make short clips of themselves doing whatever they like whether it is original and creative or just a copy of something else they have seen. It links people together making society a community as users are allowed to comment on other users videos, like the videos or subscribe to a users channel.
I agree that musical artists in order to promote themselves need to upload their videos onto Youtube as it is the prime platform in promoting their music. Youtube allows artists to not just uploaded their songs, but to add a video as well as many other functions. Users are allowed to express their individualism and can watch other people’s songs or covers.
To back up my opinion many popular artists nowadays were actually discovered through Youtube such as Justin Bieber who went from a ordinary boy who’s mother uploaded small clips of him singing to Youtube to a musical phenomenon. Also recently a song known as Gangnam Style was a single produced by South Korean pop artist PSY. It was released on July 15th 2012 and was debuted at number one in Korea eventually reaching number one position in 33 countries like France, United Kingdom, Australia and many more. By October 30th, 2012 this music video had been viewed over 600 million times on Youtube alone making it the sites third most watched video and most watched K-pop video. It is a worldwide phenomenon mainly because of its catchy beat and the artist humorous music video especially his dance moves. It has also been nominated for the best video award at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards and now is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the most liked video in Youtube history. This shows how powerful Youtube can be and how successful this music video has become just through being put on this advertising website. People are now making parodies and lots of audience groups have reacted to this video and are copying PSY comical horse-riding dance such as “Eton Style” made by a group of boys from Eton school. PSY has now made several performance on T.V. and at concerts following the release of is song. Justin Biebers talent manager has now decided to make history with PSY and has been signed to Braun’s Schoolboy Records as he was the first Korean artist to break a big record in the Inited States.
This simple song that didn't have majorly big funding behind it, through Youtube has become one of the most popular songs breaking records and being nominated for awards. Myspace personally I think became redundant although some users still use it because of other sites being developed especially Youtube. Gangnam Style shows that Youtube is the prime platform for musical artists to promote themselves due to the many features and aspects of the site as well as the amount of users who regularly both take part in and watch videos online.
