Rock genre and pop genre are completely different types of music styles. As well as having contrasting target audiences the way in which they are represented are very unalike.
Rock music videos tend to about the artist or band physically performing and the video will show a continuous feed with maybe different shots of a live performance or concert. Rock is very loud, heavy music and the look associated with this genre is a grunge, dark look to the genre. The performers will usually be dressed in dull colours like black with no make up on or very strange make up for example very pale faces with dark black eyes as well as leather clothing. Rock is not really centered around the looks of the artists but predominantly on the music however Pop music is the complete opposite and is focused around how a performer looks and what they are wearing.
Pop videos are very performance based and are really like a short film for example Justin Biebers video to As Long As You Love Me song. It has a clear storyline from beginning, middle to end which is usually to do with love or a relatable topic in society today. The music video will have lots of financial backing behind it compared to Rock music videos that will have a low cost expense. Pop music is more cheesy but does relate and sell well with lots of audiences nowadays as it s so popular especially with the younger era. Both genres appeal to their target audience by including things in the video that they know there audiences will enjoy watching and end up wanting to purchase. For example Pop music audiences generally want to see a storyline within the music video that is of a high quality, is performance based and is over the top. Compared to Rock music videos, audiences would rather just listen to the music and do not really have a great deal of bother about visually watching a music video that has a high standard.
Chris Anderson came up with the long tail theory which does suggest that products in low demand or that have a low sales volume can collectively make up a market share that rivals or exceeds the relatively few current bestsellers and blockbusters, if the store or distribution channel is large enough. This means that although Rock music may not be as popular and not have such big financial backing as Pop music it can still eventually make the same amount of sales.
They are both completely different genres of music and the music videos made are very individual to each other however they are both successful, this is due to big music companies which know exactly what the target audience would like to see and eventually make this happen.
